At a time when the affordable housing crisis has penetrated the most affordable neighborhoods in Dorchester, the need for Dorchester Bay EDC’s Homeowner Services Program is greater than ever. The demand for affordable units is overwhelming, but too many homeowners are unable to access the capital to repair vacant units. Predatory lenders have resurfaced, threatening to rob low-income homeowners of their single greatest asset. Statistics show Dorchester registering the highest incidence of harmful childhood blood lead levels in all of Boston. The Goal of our Homeowner Services Program mission is to save homes by helping homeowners eliminate dangerous conditions. We offer 3 core services in the Homeowner Services Department Lead Safe Boston- Lead paint poses a serious health risk, especially if you have young children in the house. But removing lead paint from your home can be an expensive undertaking. Through a partnership with the City of Boston’s Department of Neighborhood Development (DND), Lead Safe Boston program (LSB), we can help qualified homeowners delead their properties to reduce the risk of lead-paint poisoning in children. Affordable Home Improvement Loans Homeowners who cannot get typical bank financing are able to get a loan through our program. The Dorchester Bay Economic Development Corporations’s Home Improvement Loan Program assists Dorchester homeowners in making improvements to their homes. In addition, every homeowner gets the counseling and technical assistance needed to ensure what improvements need to be made and financial assistance to pay for these improvements through low interest loans. Home improvement loans start at 6% for low to moderate income families who fall under the 80% median guideline. We also provide de-leading loans, generally at 0% deferred through Mass Housing. We also offer a five year deleading grant program made possible Lead Safe Boston.
