IMPORTANT News...Please check back in a few days!!!

Fairmount Line Introduction: The Fairmount Line, a commuter rail line which runs through Dorchester, Mattapan and Hyde Park, currently represents one of the worst examples of missed transit opportunities in the MBTA’s system.  It roars through 9 miles of densely populated, mostly lower income communities and stops infrequently at only a few stations.  The legislature recently passed the 2004 Transportation Bond Bill, which included $43.5 M to transform the Fairmount line, improve transportation equity in the greater Boston area, and better serve a very large population of existing and potential transit riders. However, comprehensive implementation funds have not yet been allocated. Fixing this rail line will also have enormous economic impacts on neighborhoods along the line, will serve smart growth values, and will provide opportunities to improve and increase transit oriented development and affordable housing.

Current transit organizing: For a number of years organizations lobbied the MBTA and the legislature to include $43 million in the Transportation Bond Bill to help convert the current Fairmount commuter rail line into a rapid transit line, “the Indigo Line.” The MBTA is currently spending $35 million on “fix it first” improvements for the line that can serve as a match to leverage state funds for new stations.

Organization Description: The Fairmount Line CDC Collaborative is comprised of Dorchester Bay EDC, Codman Square NDC, Mattapan CDC and Southwest Boston CDC, areas totaling 176,000 people. The four CDCs along this line have mobilized to support groups organizing for transit service upgrades, to add more stops, to raise funds together for development and planning capacity, and to ensure that future development near transit stops provides both Transit Oriented affordable housing and economic opportunities for our large population of low-income people.
